Devotional Reading: Joshua 7:1–20 (NLT)
What We Hide Still Matters
After the victory at Jericho, Israel went to battle against Ai expecting another easy win. Instead, they were defeated. Joshua was devastated, but God revealed that the real issue was not military strength. Someone in the camp had disobeyed God and hidden what had been taken from Jericho.
Devotional Thoughts:
Joshua 7 is a sobering reminder that hidden disobedience still has consequences. Israel had just experienced an incredible victory, but success did not remove their need for obedience. In fact, after Jericho, they may have been especially vulnerable to confidence in themselves.
Before the battle at Ai, the spies decided only a small number of soldiers were needed. The enemy looked manageable. But the greatest threat was not outside the camp. It was what had been allowed to remain hidden within it.
God eventually exposed Achan’s sin, not because He wanted to embarrass His people, but because what was hidden had to be dealt with before they could move forward.
The same principle applies to us. We can look strong publicly while privately holding onto attitudes, habits, bitterness, compromise, or disobedience that God has already challenged. What is hidden from people is never hidden from God.
Sometimes before asking God for the next victory, we need to allow Him to examine what is happening in our hearts.

Practical Application:
- Ask God honestly, “Is there anything in me that I have been hiding, excusing, or refusing to surrender?”
- Do not allow past success to make you spiritually careless.
- Deal quickly with conviction instead of covering or minimizing it.
- Remember that private choices can affect more than just you.
- Before asking God to change your circumstances, invite Him to search your heart.
Devotional Prayer
Father, search my heart and show me anything that does not honor You. Give me courage to deal honestly with hidden sin, wrong attitudes, or areas of compromise. Keep me humble after victories and dependent on You in every season. Help me walk in integrity at all times. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
