God is My Refuge

Psalms 91:1 NIV

"Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty."

Reflection

Psalm 91 is a powerful reminder that God is our ultimate refuge and protector. Life often feels uncertain, filled with sickness, danger, fear, and even unseen challenges that surround us. Yet this psalm declares that those who dwell in God’s presence experience His covering and peace.

Notice the psalm doesn’t say troubles won’t come. Instead, it promises that God will be with us in the midst of them. He shields us, delivers us, and provides a safe place to rest. The imagery of a mother bird covering her young with her wings (v. 4) paints a picture of God’s tender yet strong protection.

The key is to dwell, to remain close to Him, not just visit when life gets hard. When we live with an awareness of His presence, we find courage when afraid, peace when anxious, and confidence when life feels out of control.

Practical Application

Start your day in God’s presence.
Read a few verses of Psalm 91 each morning and speak them as a declaration over your life.

Memorize a promise.
Choose one verse (like v. 2: “He is my refuge and my fortress”) and repeat it whenever fear or worry rises.

Stay under His covering.
Instead of relying only on your own strength or security, practice surrender by praying, “Lord, I trust You with this situation.”

Devotional Prayer:
Father, thank You for being my refuge and fortress. Help me to dwell in Your presence daily and to trust in Your protection no matter what I face. Remind me that You are faithful, and that in Your shadow I find peace and rest. Amen.
