Acrostic Poem

Psalms 119:105 NIV

"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."

Reflection

Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, is written as an acrostic poem where each section begins with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Verse 105 uses the imagery of light to describe how God’s Word guides His people.

In the ancient world, travelers carried small oil lamps that illuminated only a step or two ahead, not the entire road. The psalmist draws on this picture to show that God’s Word doesn’t always reveal the whole journey but gives just enough light to walk faithfully one step at a time.

This is a reminder for us today: God rarely hands us the entire map of our future. Instead, He calls us to trust His Word daily, allowing Scripture to shape our choices, protect us from stumbling, and provide peace when life feels uncertain.

His Word is both the lamp for the immediate step and the light for the longer path. Walking in His light means living with steady dependence, one step of obedience at a time.

Practical Application

Start your day in the Word
Let Scripture set the direction before you face decisions.

Take the next step, not every step
Trust God to show you today’s obedience, and let tomorrow’s light come when you get there.

Shine for others
Share verses that have guided you with others to help light their path.

Devotional Prayer:
Father, thank You that Your Word is my steady light. Help me not to rush ahead in the dark but to walk step by step with You. May I trust the daily light You give, and may my life reflect Your truth to those around me. Amen.
