Devotional Reading: Luke 1:5-25 NIV
Devotional Reading
"In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old… Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him… ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John."
Devotional Thought:
As the Christmas season begins, Luke’s Gospel opens not with angels in Bethlehem but with silence in the temple. Four hundred years had passed since God last spoke through a prophet. Zechariah and Elizabeth were faithful, yet their prayers for a child had gone unanswered. Then, in an ordinary moment of service, heaven broke its silence.
God’s message through Gabriel reminds us that waiting is never wasted when God is involved. Zechariah and Elizabeth’s story proves that delayed answers don’t mean denied promises. Even when they were beyond the age of expectation, God was preparing a miracle that would usher in the coming of Christ.
In this Advent season, defined by waiting and anticipation, we’re reminded that God still speaks in unexpected places. He answers in His time, not ours. The same God who remembered Zechariah and Elizabeth remembers you. When life feels quiet or delayed, hold steady. God is still writing the story.
Practical Application
Stay faithful in the waiting:
Like Zechariah and Elizabeth, keep serving and praying even when you don’t see results. God’s timing is perfect.
Believe that God hears you:
The angel said, “Your prayer has been heard.” Take comfort in knowing none of your prayers are ignored.
Prepare your heart:
Advent isn’t just about remembering Christ’s first coming; it’s about readying ourselves for His presence today.

Devotional Prayer
Father, as I enter this season of anticipation, help me to wait with faith like Zechariah and Elizabeth. When life feels silent, remind me that You are still at work. Renew my hope, open my ears to Your voice, and prepare my heart to celebrate the arrival of Your Son with fresh joy and expectancy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
