God is My Shepherd

Psalms 23:1 NIV
"The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing."

Reflection

Psalm 23 is one of the most well-known passages in the entire Bible. It paints a picture of a God who doesn’t just sit high and look low, but one who walks with us, leads us, protects us, and provides for us like a loving shepherd.
David, who himself had been a shepherd, understood the closeness and commitment required to care for sheep. Sheep are easily lost, vulnerable to danger, and need constant guidance. That’s us. But the beauty of Psalm 23 is this: even in our weakness, we are not alone.
  • When we’re tired, He leads us to rest (“He makes me lie down in green pastures”).
  • When we’re confused, He gives direction (“He guides me along the right paths…”).
  • When we’re afraid, He gives us courage (“Even though I walk through the darkest valley…”).
  • When we’re under attack, He covers us (“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies”).
  • When we feel empty, He fills us (“You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows”).
This Psalm doesn’t promise a life free of hardship, but it does promise that you’ll never face it alone.

Practical Application

Speak the Psalm over your day.
Personalize it. Instead of “The Lord is my shepherd,” say: “Lord, You are leading me today. I will not lack anything I need.” Speak it when you're stressed, uncertain, or feeling overwhelmed.

Rest when He says rest.
Green pastures and still waters aren’t just poetic, they’re necessary. Carve out a moment this week to truly rest: unplug, breathe, reflect. Rest is holy.

Trust His guidance, even in the dark.
When you can’t see the path, lean into the Shepherd. Don’t confuse the valley with a dead end. If He’s with you, you’re still on the right path.
