Ordinary Disciples Pt. 4

Devotional Reading: John 13:12–15 (NLT)

Devotional Reading

After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.

Devotional Thought

In a moment when Jesus could have asserted His authority, He chose a towel. The One who deserved to be served knelt down to serve. This wasn’t just an act of kindness; it was a model for how His followers should live.
Jesus redefined greatness. It is not about position, recognition, or control. It is about humility, love, and serving others, even in ways that feel unnoticed or uncomfortable. Foot washing was a low task, but Jesus made it a high calling.
Following Jesus means adopting His posture. If He, as Lord, served others, then serving is not beneath us; serving is essential to who we are becoming and who we are called to be.

Practical Application

  • Look for simple ways to serve others today, even if no one notices.
  • Choose humility over recognition in your interactions.
  • Ask yourself, “Where can I serve instead of be served?”
  • Serve with the right heart; out of love, not obligation.

Devotional Prayer

Father, I thank You for showing me what true leadership looks like. Help me to walk in humility and serve others the way You served me. Shape my heart so I reflect Your love in both big and small ways. Amen.
