Devotional Reading: Matthew 9:35–38 (ESV)
Devotional Reading
“And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.’”
Devotional Thought:
Jesus did not just see crowds. He saw people. He saw their pain, their confusion, and their need, and His response was compassion. He was moved, not annoyed. He was present, not distant. Then He told His disciples that the harvest was plentiful, but the laborers were few.
These verses reminds us that ministry begins with how we see people. If we only see interruptions, problems, or numbers, we will miss the heart of Jesus. But when we ask God to let us see people through His eyes, compassion grows and obedience follows. Jesus calls us not only to pray for the harvest, but to be willing to serve in it.

Practical Application
- Ask God to help you see people with compassion instead of judgment or indifference.
- Pray daily for God to send workers into the harvest.
- Be available for God to use you in simple ways through encouragement, service, and sharing the gospel.
- Pay attention to the needs around you instead of rushing past them.
Devotional Prayer
Father, give me Your heart for people. Help me see others the way You see them, with compassion and love. Teach me not to overlook the needs around me. Make me willing to pray, to serve, and to be used by You in the harvest. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
