First Things First Pt. 2

Devotional Reading: Daniel 1:8 NIV

Devotional Reading

"But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way."

Every fast begins with a decision long before it shows up in our behavior. Daniel 1:8 tells us that Daniel resolved. To resolve means he settled the matter in his heart before temptation ever pressed him. His strength didn’t come from willpower in the moment; it came from conviction decided in advance.

Daniel was in a foreign land, under pressure to blend in, succeed, and comply. The king’s food represented comfort, status, acceptance, and compromise. Daniel understood something critical: spiritual power is preserved through spiritual discipline. By choosing restraint, he positioned himself for clarity, favor, and influence.

Fasting works the same way. It is not about deprivation; it’s about dedication. It is a deliberate choice to say, “God, You matter more than my appetite, my comfort, and my routines.”

Today, as we begin this fast, know that God is not asking for perfection; He’s asking for resolve. The fast begins when you decide, I will honor God with my body, my focus, and my obedience.

Daniel didn’t protest loudly or rebel disrespectfully. He made a firm decision and followed it with wisdom and humility. When we fast with a resolved heart, not reluctantly, not emotionally, but intentionally, we create space for God to work deeply within us.

Practical Application:
Resolve before resistance:
Decide now what this fast means for you and what you are committing to God, spiritually, mentally, and physically.

Fast with purpose:
Don’t just remove food or distractions; replace them with prayer, Scripture, and listening.

Honor God privately:
This fast is not for visibility; it’s for transformation. What happens in secret shapes what God does openly.

Devotional Prayer

Father, today I resolve in my heart to honor You. As I begin this fast, I surrender my appetite, my habits, and my distractions to You. Give me discipline where I feel weak, clarity where I feel uncertain, and grace for this journey ahead. Set this time apart for your purposes. Let this fast mark a turning point in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
