Thanks and Giving Pt. 3

Devotional Reading: Colossians 3:15-17 NIV

Devotional Reading

"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

As Thanksgiving approaches, our minds naturally turn toward gratitude, but Paul reminds us in Colossians that thankfulness isn’t a once-a-year practice; it’s a way of life shaped by the peace and presence of Christ.

He begins, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” That word rule means to act as an umpire, to decide what gets to stay and what must go. When Christ’s peace rules, worry, resentment, and comparison lose their hold. Gratitude flows more freely when our hearts are anchored in His peace.

Next, Paul says, “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly.” Gratitude grows in hearts and communities where God’s Word lives deeply, not just visits occasionally. When His truth shapes our thoughts, our conversations become filled with encouragement, worship, and wisdom.

Finally, Paul ties it all together: “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of Jesus, giving thanks to God.”Gratitude isn’t limited to a meal around the table; it’s the posture of someone who recognizes that every good thing is a gift from God (See James 1:17). When we give thanks through Christ, even ordinary moments become acts of worship.

This Thanksgiving, may our gratitude go beyond words and become a lifestyle; a reflection of peace within, worship through, and thankfulness toward God in all things.

Practical Application
Let peace lead:
When anxiety or conflict arises, pause and ask, “Is Christ’s peace ruling my heart right now?”
Dwell richly:
Take time this week to read or share a verse of Scripture before your Thanksgiving meal. Let the Word “dwell richly” among your family.

Give thanks in everything:
Whether you’re cooking, cleaning, traveling, or gathering, whisper prayers of thanksgiving throughout your day.

Devotional Prayer

Father, thank You for the gift of peace that anchors my heart and the Word that fills my soul. This Thanksgiving, help me live with gratitude that overflows into every word and action. May my life reflect Your goodness, and may thankfulness become the rhythm of my days. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
