Devotional Reading: Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV
Devotional Reading
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."
After walking us through the “Heroes of Faith” in Hebrews 11, the writer now turns the spotlight to us. The imagery shifts from a courtroom of witnesses to a stadium filled with heroes of faith; Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Rahab, and countless others, cheering us on as we run the race of life.
This race isn’t about speed; it’s about endurance. The text tells us to “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.” Some weights aren’t sinful; they’re just distractions that slow us down. Faith requires focus. You can’t run effectively while holding onto resentment, fear, comparison, or comfort. Let them go so you can move forward freely.
And how do we keep running when life gets hard? By “fixing our eyes on Jesus.” He’s both the pioneer, the One who started the race, and the perfecter, the One who will finish it with us. Jesus endured the cross because He saw joy on the other side. Likewise, our faith strengthens when our focus shifts from present struggle to eternal purpose.
Practical Application
Identify your weights:
Ask God to show you what’s slowing your spiritual progress: habits, fears, relationships, or distractions, and surrender them.
Stay consistent:
Keep showing up in prayer, worship, and the Word, even when you don’t feel like it. Endurance grows through repetition.
Refocus daily:
Start each morning by saying, “Jesus, I fix my eyes on You today.” Let that be your anchor.
Run your race, not someone else’s:
Don’t compare your pace to others. The “race marked out for us” is personal; faithful obedience matters more than visible success.

Devotional Prayer
Father, help me to run my race with endurance. Show me what I need to release so I can move freely in Your purpose. When I grow weary, remind me to fix my eyes on You, the One who began this good work and will bring it to completion. Strengthen me to run faithfully until I cross the finish line in Your presence. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
